Troyan Monastery
One of the largest and best-known Bulgarian monasteries is 25 km from Apriltsi.
The monastery was founded at the end of the 16th century. It is remarkable for its architecture, its woodcarving and the wonderful murals in the monastery church. They are the work of Zahari Zograf, one of the greatest painters of the Bulgarian National Revival.
In the middle of the 19th century the monastery was a well-known centre of letters and a true centre of the revolution. Vasil Levski, the Apostle of Freedom, founded a revolutionary committee here, in which all the monks took part. The museum of the Apostle in the monastery tells of those times.
